A reformer, social activist, educator, freedom fighter and staunch feminist, Leela Roy (Leela Nag) was one of the 15 women who were part of the Constituent Assembly that drafted the Indian Constitution.

   She was the only female member from Bengal to be elected to the Assembly in 1946. She resigned from her post to protest against the partition of India.Leela Roy was a close friend of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, who inspired her to do her bit for the freedom struggle.

    Leela (Nag) was born on October 2, 1900 in an upper middle-class family in Goalpara Assam and grew up in Sylhet, Bengal (now in Bangladesh).

    She completed her schooling at Eden High School, Dhaka. She was then awarded a scholarship to study for a bachelor’s degree in English at Bethune College, Calcutta where she was awarded the Padmabati Gold Medal for her academic achievements.
