Accamma Cherian, an unsung woman hero of India’s freedom movement, played a pivotal role in the fight for India’s independence, particularly in the Kerala region. Her determination to resist colonial rule took several forms, including participation in protests, organizing marches and giving speeches advocating for freedom.

    Mahatma Gandhi had given her the sobriquet ‘Jhansi Rani of Travancore,’ comparing her to the legendary Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi.

    Known for her unyielding spirit, courage, leadership and commitment to the cause of freedom, Accamma made significant contributions in mobilising women volunteers in the struggle for freedom and the movement for the integration of the princely states within the Indian nation.
