75 Years after Gandhi's Assassination

January 30, 2023, marks the 75th death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, who played a significant role in the freedom struggle of India and is credited with freeing the country from the fetters of British rule in 1947.

January 30 is observed as Martyrs’ Day or Shaheed Diwas across the entire country to evoke the sacrifices made by Mahatma Gandhi for the independence of India.

It is also a time for the nation to remember and honour all those who have sacrificed their lives for the country’s sovereignty and swaraj. The day is also observed as a day of non-violence and peace.

Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse on January 30, 1948, just a few months after India accomplished Independence from British rule.

Gandhi was shot dead by Godse, while he was on his way to a prayer meeting at Birla House in New Delhi. The news of his demise sent tremors across the nation and the world, and he was mourned by people of all....
