Philately - A look back at its history

   Any standard dictionary refers that it is a study of postage/ revenue stamps/labels. The etymology tracing to 1864 from the Greek word, ‘Ateles’ meaning tax free labels and Phil refers to the study or love of. Hence, collecting of stamps is not confined to the numbers.

     The quantity, in fact, does not count and it is only the quality. What has been studied out of your collection is more important than accumulation of numerous stamps in your album. The hobby is popularly referred to as the ‘King of Hobbies’.

World’s First Postage Stamp

   The hobby of collecting stamps commenced within one year of the issuance of world’s first postage stamp on 6th May 1840 by Great Britain. There was an advertisement in London Times in 1841 where a young lady wanted stamps to decorate her drawing room.
