   India, a nation with 1.3 billion people, has a conventional army of about 1.4 million soldiers. Pakistan, with a population of over 200 million people, has some 650,000 troops. * * * * *

Air pollution

   Over 1.2 million Indians died early due to exposure to unsafe air in 2017. Air pollution is now the third-highest cause of death among all health risks, ranking just above smoking, in India. South Asians, including Indians, are dying early—their life expectancy has reduced by over 2.6 years. This is much higher than the global tally of reduced life expectancy by an average of 20 months. While globally a child born today will die 20 months sooner than would be expected without air pollution, in India they would die 2.6 years earlier. * * * * *

Cancer deaths

   Cancer killed 7,84,821 people in India in 2018. They include 4,13,519 men and 3,71,302 women. At present, 2.25....
