Sustainability and its relevance in the Modern World

   One of the most serious threats facing mankind these days is the deterioration of the biosphere, in all three levels - atmosphere, soil and water. The human behaviour plays a very important role in the emergence and sustenance of environmental problems and it is of utmost importance that a shift in human behaviour is brought about. Where consumerism, waste, excessive use of resources, especially non-renewable resources, contamination, egoistic and inequitable behaviours, etc., prevail, it should be replaced by ‘sustainable behaviour’; a term which refers to ‘a set of deliberate and effective actions that result in the conservation of the socio-physical environment for the present and future generations’.

   The original definition of sustainable development is usually considered to be: “Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs,”....
