On August eight, seventy eight years ago, Mahatma Gandhi gave the call for British rulers to “Quit India” and for the Indians to “Do or Die” to make this happen. The iconic slogan “Quit India” was coined by not Mohandas Gandhi but one of his close associates Yusuf Meharally.
Gandhi infused ‘Quit India’ with the spirit of his phrase “Do or Die”. Meherally, proposed the phrase during the historic session of the then All India Congress Committee held on 7th and 8th of August 1942 in Mumbai when Mahatma Gandhi asked his team to propose a catchword.
Gandhi selected Quit India from among a dozen slogans proposed by different leaders including Rajagopalachari and Jawaharlal Nehru.
