Anton Chekhov lived, 1860-1904 A.D., during a fascinating period of Russian history, which his short stories and plays depicted. It was his pragmatic non-ideological approach that distinguished him from other great writers. His father was one Pavel Yegorovich Chekhov; the son of a former serf and his mother a Ukrainian woman called, Yevgeniya. The strict regime of his father made Chekhov’s childhood painful despite the love and kindness showered by his mother. When his father, a grocer, shifted to Moscow to avoid the debt collectors, Chekhov was left behind as he was attending the Greek School and the Taganrog Gymnasium; later renamed Chekhov Gymnasium.
