It was his pragmatic non-ideological approach that distinguished him from other great writers. His father was one Pavel Yegorovich Chekhov; the son of a former serf and his mother a Ukrainian woman called, Yevgeniya. The strict regime of his father made Chekhov’s childhood painful despite the love and kindness showered by his mother.
