    One of the basic properties of magnetism is that a magnet always has two poles, north and south, yet we don’t know any theoretical reason why magnetic monopoles; magnets with a single North Pole or South Pole, could not exist.

Brief history

   Thales of Miletus, northern Greece reported that a piece of rock from Magnesia, naturally magnetic form of magnetite known as Lodestone, had strange properties. Lodestone could attract iron, bit no other material, even more mysteries, when hung from a piece of string, a piece of lodestone would always orient itself in the same way. He also noticed that amber could attract light objects such as feathers or hair after it had been rubbed; which is now understood as an effect of static electricity.
