The Kiwi fruit known scientifically as Actinidia deliciosa belongs to the family Actinidiaceae and were brought to New Zealand from China by missionaries in the early 20th century. Native to Central China, kiwifruits were originally known as ‘Yang Tao’ and the other known names throughout the century, including ‘melonette’, ‘strange fruit’, ‘mihoutao’ or ‘monkey fruit’.
