A new form of DNA has been discovered in human cells, providing fascinating insights into the working of the ‘Language of Life’, first described in 1953.

The familiar icon in biology, the double helix, which codes for the Language of Life, indicating what makes you you was first described in 1953 by James Watson and Francis Crick in Cambridge, England. Today, after about four decades the icon has a rival throwing yet another surprise. The discovery of a four-strand shape of the DNA proves the saying that no part of biology is above modification.

The new DNA structure is called i-motif. It is not completely new as it was found in lab work sometime ago. But only recently was this discovered in living human cells. The eureka moment came in Sydney, Australia at the Garavan Institute of Medical Research.

The DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) structure, an elegant spiral showing the double helix,....
