Diabetes scourge

Urban India has 10 to 12 per cent of its population suffering from diabetes but rural India, due to better food and lifestyle, has a much lower incidence of 3 to 4 per cent. Diabetes currently affects 70 million Indians, which is more than 7.5 per cent of the adult population, the average age of onset being 42.5 years, and nearly 1 million Indians die due to diabetes every year.

Diabetics are 40 times more likely to lose a leg as compared to non-diabetics. About 75% of all leg amputations happen in people with diabetes, and 25% diabetics develop foot ulcers in their life-time. In India, 40,000 legs are amputated every year and 80% of them are in the neuropathic-infected foot group which is potentially preventable. * * * * *
