Every year on June 12 the World Day against Child Labour is observed to raise awareness of the plight of child labourers world-wide. As the world strives to achieve the elimination of child labour by 2025, this year’s (2017) World Day against Child Labour will focus on the impact of conflicts and disasters on child labour.

    According to UN appraisal, globally over 1.5 billion people live in countries that are affected by conflict, violence and fragility. At the same time, around 200 million people are affected by disasters every year.

   A third of them are children. A significant proportion of the 168 million children engaged in child labour live in areas affected by conflict and disaster. The 2011 national census of India found the total number of child labourers, aged 5–14, to be at 4.35 million, and the total child population to be 259.64 million in that age group.
