Kalidas a life shrouded in ambiguity, is as legendary as the legacy which he leaves behind. In-spite of Kalidas’s importance as a writer, nearly all we know about his personal life is based on educated guesswork. Many Indian and Western scholars place him in different ages in order to prove their arguments.

    Some scholars believe Kalidas lived and wrote in the first or second century B.C. Many others have the notion that the plays and poems reflect the life and style of the great Gupta Empire, and that Kalidas probably lived at the court of Chandragupta II around A.D 400.

    According to another legend, the poet was known for his beauty which brought him to the attention of a princess; Vidyotma, who married him. However, as legend has it, Kalidasa had grown up without much education, and the princess was ashamed of his ignorance and coarseness.
