Dragon fruit, Hylocereusundatus (Haw.)is a native to the hot climate and deserts of Central and South America from where it has spread to tropical and subtropical America, Asia, Australia and the Middle East. The crophas received worldwide recognition, first as an ornamental plant and then as a fruit crop. It is a climbing vine cactus species in the family Cactaceae. It is also known as Pitaya, Strawberry Pear, Belle of the night, Cinderella plant, Brahma kamal, etc.
The dragon fruit’s outer skin is like cactus, resembling that of the scales of a mythical dragon and hence the name “Dragon fruit”. It is a fast return perennial fruit crop with production in the second year after planting and full production within five years and will grow upto 20 years.
