The recent accident in Puttingal temple Kollam during fireworks display has really set minds rolling on the associated dangers of fireworks. It is pertinent to have a knowledge of the science behind fireworks and also on the safety aspects which often are grossly neglected. Of course the magnitude of the tragedy at Puttingal is undisputedly the worst ever, but the others also should be taken in all seriousness. .
1952-Sabarimala - 68 people were reported dead at the temple during a similar instance.
1978-Thrissur pooram - Eight people died in an incident where a firecracker landed on spectators.
