The history of journalism in India is intimately linked to the history of our fight for freedom. Many of our great national leader such as Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Bala Gangadhar Tilak, Bipin Chandrapal, Rabindranath Tagore, Surenderanath Banerjee, Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Sisir Kumar Ghosh, G. Subramania Iyer, C. Rajagopalachari and Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu were journalists.
They have fought not just for political freedom but also for the freedom of expression, to free the nation and to free the society from social prejudice, casteism, discrimination, etc. These leaders used newspapers, magazines and other printed materials to propagate their ideas and motivate the people to take active part in India’s struggle for freedom.
