Where land meets the water– marsh or marine, wetlands are the cradle of species diversity. Noted as the “kidneys of the landscape” and as “biological supermarkets” for their functional cycles and the rich biodiversity, wetlands are among the most productive ecosystems.

    On 30 August 2021, the UN General Assembly declared February 2 as World Wetlands Day, by adopting the resolution 75/317. It was on this same date the Convention on Wetlands, commonly known as the Ramsar Convention, was adopted in 1971 in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea.

    The day is celebrated to create and spread awareness of the importance of wetlands. The theme of this year is ‘Wetlands action for people and nature’, highlighting the importance of actions to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands for humans and planetary health.
