Prior to the Renaissance in Bengal and Maharashtra, regional problems had occupied the centre stage, drawing the attention of literary men e.g. in Bengal “Bang Chetna” became predominant, while in Maharashtra, “Maharashtra religion” was greatly expounded.

   However, the spirit of nationalism gathered momentum gradually, crumbling and dissolving regional barriers. The plight of India was already being depicted and vividly portrayed in Hindi literature, thus giving it a new direction and purpose.

   During this period, some eminent writers and scholars who, although belonging to other regions, promoted and accelerated the process of renaissance in the regions to which they had migrated. Two outstanding personalities deserve mention in this regard. One was Sakharam Deyuskar and the other was Madhav Rao Sapre. Both of them belong to Maharashtra.
