A unique and variety fruit crop for home garden,cempedak is becoming popular among fruit lovers. Artocarpus integer, commonly known as cempedak (pronounced “chem-pe-dak”) - a relative of jackfruit and breadfruit belongs to the family moraceae. It is native to southeast Asia. Cempedak is widely grown in Indonesia, Thailand and Malay Peninsuala. In India, it grows in the southern states of Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Cempedak grows in tropical regions where water is available in abundance.
Coastal regions provide apt environment for their cultivation. Cempedak trees are large, evergreen trees. Though they can grow to a height of 20 m, most of them reach a dozen meters. Male and female flowers grow on the same tree. There are many varieties, although few are named. The vigorously growing tree can bear heavy crops of fruit once or twice a year. The fruits are shaped cylindrical to spherical.
