The International Organization for Standardization (ISO), located in Geneva, in consultation with standards formulating bodies of member countries, develops standards for the international community, but maintains independence once a standard in its final form is accepted.
Every five years standards get reviewed and updated to enable relevance to updated technologies. The Standards ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 22000:2005, among many others, are currently Indian standards, as India is one of the member countries. Though ISO 9001:2008 can be applied to any organization including food manufacturers, ISO 22000:2008 is a comprehensive standard exclusively for food.
