Hydrogen as a fuel

  The use of hydrogen as fuel is probably the most intensely investigated aspect by the car manufacturing industry because it is a clean energy that can be found almost everywhere. On the other hand, the technology needed to use it as a fuel is neither simple nor cheap.

  In spite of the difficulties, manufacturers are now a days releasing the first hydrogen car models, with which they hope to develop the new market. Hydrogen is by far the most common element in universe. Nevertheless, it does not constitute a directly usable fuel and so it is not an energy source, but an energy vector. Its power density is three times superior to that from gasoline.

  Its combustion with oxygen produces water and heat, according to the reaction: H2 + 1/2O2 H2 O and hence no harmful emissions. At present, 95% of the hydrogen is obtained from fossil fuels. However, there are different ways in which it is obtained. The most significant....
