Girish Karnad is an Indian actor, film director, writer and playwright who mostly has been working in the south Indian Cinema. His rise as a playwright in the 1960’s, marked the coming of age of the modern Indian playwriting in Kannada as well as in Indian English. He is the recipient of the 1998 Jnanapeeth award, the highest literary honour conferred in India.
Prior to this, he was conferred Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan by the Government of India. He has translated his plays into English himself and has won critical acclaim. His plays have been translated by others into several Indian languages and were directed by famous people like Ebrahim Alkazi, B. V. Karanth, Alyque Padamsee, Prasanna, Arvind Gaur, Satyadev Dubey, Vijaya Mehta, Shyamanand Jalan and Amal Allana.
