‘ Tourism’ is a well-known term to everyone. Because, everyone loves to travel. Travelling for leisure, recreational, business or personal purpose of a short or limited span of time is called tourism. Most of us may not have thought about the history of tourism and its evolution. Like all other concepts, tourism also has a trace of history behind it. It is believed that the term ‘tourist’ and ‘tourism’ was first used in 1772 and 1881 respectively.
According to William F. Theobald, the term ‘tour’ has a Latin and Greek origin; Latin term ‘tonare’ and Greek word ‘tornos’. The meanings of these terms in modern English is said to represent ‘one’s turn’. The suffix ‘ism’ refers to ‘action or process’.
