A bunch of banana costs Rs 1000-2500! Can’t believe? Go to suburban areas of Thrissur and you could see golden coloured bananas with long inflorescence pendants neatly arranged in stalls. Known as “Chengalikkodan”, a unique banana variety cultivated in certain pockets of Thrissur, this is offered as kazhchakkulas to deities and presented as gifts. Perhaps this would be the only agricultural produce fetching this much price during onam.

   Unlike other agricultural produce it is not for the quantity but for the appearance and quality the price soars. The more showy and colourful the bunch, the more the price it fetches. The cultivation of Kazhchakkulas demands special care and individual attention. Another interesting feature is that the plantains are grown fully organically adding to their colour and texture.
