The West Bengal Government has taken the bold step of depoliticising the State universities, which will ensure a quality change in the education sector.

    The West Bengal government led by Mamata Banerjee has passed an ordinance on November 4 named the West Bengal University (amendment) Ordinance 2011, which would impede the political influence in the decision making process of the 13 state universities of West Bengal. It ensures no room for students, nonteaching employees, university alumni and politicians in the policy making and executive bodies such as the senate and syndicate of the universities. The members of the executive body from now on would be selected by nomination and there would be no elections.

   According to the new ordinance, the Vice Chancellor (VC) would be appointed by a search committee comprising 3 members nominated by the Chancellor, the Chairman of University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Senate. The search....
