Back pain is pain felt in the back that usually originates from the muscles, nerves, bones, joints or other structures in the spine. The pain can often be divided into neck pain, upper back pain, lower back pain or tailbone pain. It may have a sudden onset or can be a chronic pain; it can be constant or intermittent. It may be a dull, sharp, piercing or burning sensation.
The pain may be confined to one place or may radiate to other parts of the body. Backache may be classified by the duration of symptoms as acute (less than 4 weeks), sub acute (4–12 weeks) and chronic (more than 12 weeks). Low back pain or lumbago is the commonest type of back pain, which is more frequent in females and affecting 80% of people at some point in their lives.
