Scientifically named as Synsepalum dulcificum, the plant is a member of Sapotaceae family, native to tropical Africa.
It is known for its berry that, when eaten, causes sour foods subsequently consumed to taste sweet. This effect is due to a chemical component called miraculin. During the eighteenth century French explorers documented this plant during their exploration trips and categorised it within the family Sapotaceae.The plant has its maximum efficient production in acid soils and humid regions.
