The Gupta Empire (c. 320– 550 AD). founded by Chandragupta I (r. 320-335 AD approx.) is regarded as the “Golden Age” of ancient India. After the Mauryan Empire, the Gupta Empire maintained the largest extension over the Indian subcontinent. The Golden Age was attributed to numerous emperors of the lineage but Emperor Samudragupta’s contribution is immense. Also known as the “Napolean of India’, he was a ruthless and restless warrior whose only intention was to stabilise his empire.
Early life and ascension to the throne
The Eran inscription points out that Samudragupta was the best among all the sons of Chandragupta I.
