Blood transfusion is a life-saving procedure in clinical practice where the deficiency of blood in an individual due to hemorrhage, severe injuries, anemia, and certain diseases needs to be supplemented by blood from another person. When blood from two individual humans is mixed, sometimes clumping occurs which is known as Agglutination. This clumping is because of immunological reactions which remained a mystery as agglutination occurred in some cases but not in others. In 1901, Austrian scientist Karl Landsteiner discovered Blood Groups which unraveled the mystery of why agglutination or clumping of blood occurred in some cases but not in others and this finding made blood transfusion safe as compatibility of blood transfusion became predictable for which he was honored with Nobel Prize in 1930.
Before we try to understand Blood Groups and Agglutination, we need to have some concepts clear. First, let us see what an Antigen is: Antigens trigger your....
