December 9, 2021 is the fifth death anniversary of P. Viswambharan, prominent freedom fighter, social reformer, socialist leader and parliamentarian. Besides his role in India’s freedom struggle, he also strived for the upliftment of the downtrodden in the society. He worked hard to eradicate untouchability and fought for the rights of Harijans.

   Born as the son of Padmanabhan and Chellamma of Charuvila house, Vellar a small village near Kovalam in Thiruvananthapuram on June 25, 1925, Viswambharan had his school education from different schools in the Thiruvananthapuram district. He had his college education at the Scot Christian College, Nagercoil; Arts College, Thiruvananthapuram; and University College, Thiruvananthapuram. After graduation in History and Economics he joined the Thiruvananthapuram Government Law College, but couldn’t complete legal studies as he got deeply involved in the freedom movement by then.
