In a comprehensive list recently issued by Stanford University in collaboration with Elsevier BV of the Netherlands, 2042 Indians were named, with the bulk hailing from IITs, IISc, and other premier scientific institutions. Using a cumulative career citation (C-index) as a reference for the year 2021, the list shows the top two per cent of the most-cited scientists in several areas.

   The survey has provided an opportunity to learn more about where the researchers stand in terms of contributing to science in their particular fields. Such findings urge aspiring researchers to work with more fervour and intensity to do important research. The list includes standardised data on citations, h-index and citations to articles with various authorship positions, as well as a composite indicator. The analysis was carried out since there is no large-scale database that lists all of the most-cited scientists in each discipline.
