Since early times, human beings have wanted to have control over their reproduction. Birth control was well documented in ancient Egypt in the Kahun Papyrus from 1850 BC which described various contraceptive measures including the use of plants and recent research has confirmed that some of them may have had spermicidal qualities. Ancient Greeks and Romans had documented in the 1st century AD many plants for birth control purposes and recent researches have proved that few of them may have been effective. Aristotle and Hippocrates had described birth control methods which appear to be ineffective according to our present knowledge. Ancient Chinese and Indian documents mentioned various contraceptive methods many of which may or may not have been effective.
