Intelligent packaging materials have been defined as “materials and articles that monitor the condition of packaged food or the environment surrounding the food.” They have the ability to communicate the conditions of the packaged products to the consumers, while being inert to the packed product.
It often happens that we buy some packed food products in the market and later on find the product to be having some defects like being offcolour, undesirable texture, smell or taste. This can lead to health problems and waste of food products. Scientists and technologists have developed a new technology termed intelligent packing which assures quality and reliability of the products.
In general, there are three main technologies which are used for intelligent packaging systems:
