Figs are one of the ancient fruits that grow on Ficus tree, which is a member of the Mulberry family ‘Moraceae’ and are scientifically known as Ficus carica. The name ‘fig’ originates from a Latin word ‘ficus’ which means ‘deciduous Old World tree’. The Greek philosopher, Aristotle mentioned the special pollination process of figs, in his book “History of Animals”. The Fig has a long history, the fruit has followed the footsteps of mankind and is regarded as the first fruit cultivated and harvested by humans. Archaeological findings showed the symbolic significance of fig leaves as the first clothes for Adam and Eve. It has also been a hot topic of criticisers that the Forbidden Fruit was a Fig, not the apple most commonly portrayed in the Fall of Adam and Eve from paradise. Figs are mentioned in Bible as a sign of peace and prosperity.
