Malnutrition

  About 68 per cent of the under-five deaths in India are caused due to child and mother’s malnutrition, a Lancet paper revealed. Low birth weight and short gestation leads to 83% of the neonatal deaths.

Poverty

   At least 56 per cent of India’s population lacks the means to meet their essential needs. By this measure, some 680 million Indians are deprived — more than 2.5 times the population of 270 million below the official poverty line.

Housing

   Of the 24.5 crore households in the country, nearly 16 lakh households have no shelter of their own, 2.4 crore households (13 percent of all households) have one room or less with kachcha walls and roofs, and 5.4 crore households (more than 30 per cent of all households) own no land and derive the major part of their income from manual labour.
