Jaboticaba the Brazilian Grapetree

  The world of fruit trees are filled with rich diversity and flavour. Among the fruit world, the Jaboticaba fruit tree otherwise known as Brazilian grapetree needs special mention. Scientifically known as Plinia cauliflora, the tree belongs to the the family Myrtaceae, the same family of guava fruit and native to the states of Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Goiás and São Paulo in Brazil. The fruit and tree are deeply related to the lives and culture of the Brazilian population.

  The tree is known for its purplish-black, white-pulped fruits which grow directly from the trunk and branches. They can be eaten raw or be used to make jellies, jams, juice or wine. The fruits are borne in clusters on the trunk itself and appear as small grape bunches which give an ornamental value to the fruit. Not only in colour, has the fruit also resembled grapes in taste. The fruit is rich in Carbohydrate, Potassium, Calcium, Vitamin C and Fibres.
