     I belong to the generation which is quiet familiar with frequent power cuts and load shedding. In fact, during an election, power shortage used to be a major criteria in casting votes for electing a candidate.

     Since post-independence institutions and companies in the Power sector have been performing below standards and the failure of corporate governance finally ends up in financial loss.

     Several reforms were brought about by successive governments to improve the Power sector and the industry has undergone regulatory changes since India’s independence. However, these changes have not met with any success, as most of the reforms did not address the root cause of the problem.

    The New Electricity Amendment Bill of 2021 is different from the earlier reforms. It tries to amend the regulations and bring about major changes, by focusing on the root cause of the problem and....
