Eighty years since Quit India Movement

The year 2022 marks the 80th anniversary of the ‘Quit India Movement’ or Bharat Chhodo Andolan which is one of the most momentous milestones in the history of Indian freedom movement.

The “Quit India” resolution was passed by the two-day special session of the All India Congress Committee held on 7th and 8th of August 1942 at Mumbai after giving due consideration to all points of view endorsed by the Working Committee’s resolution. It also conceded for civil disobedience if the British did not to agree to the demands for complete transfer of governance.

The operative part of the resolution said, “The Committee resolves, therefore, to sanction for the vindication of India’s right to freedom and independence, the starting of a mass struggle on non-violent lines on the non-violent strength it has gathered during the last 22 years of peaceful struggle.
