Rajaji – A virtuous life of service and purpose

    Rajaji or CR as he was affectionately called, Chakravarti Rajagopalachari was an ardent patriot, a pioneering social reformer, an able administrator and a profound scholar. Born at Hosur in Salem district in 1879, Rajaji was educated at Central College and Law College Bangalore and at Presidency College and Law College Madras. He joined the bar when he was barely 21 and built up a flourishing practice in Salem, but then gave it up to plunge himself wholeheartedly into the freedom struggle. His political career is marked by a number of achievements. He gave up his practice in response to the non-cooperation call by Gandhi.

   At one time considered Mahatma Gandhi’s heir, this brilliant lawyer from Salem, Tamil Nadu was regarded in pre-independence years as one of the top five leaders of the Congress along with Jawaharlal Nehru, Rajendra Prasad, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.
