The Indian Independence Movement was a series of historic events and socio-cultural-political processes which expanded its social base. The Vaikom Satyagraha was one among them. It was also a testing ground for the Gandhian principles of Satyagraha.

    The incredible struggle that started in the small town of Vaikom in Kerala, on March 30, 1924 lasted for 603 days amidst hostile social forces, police oppression and one of the worst floods in the town's history. The year 2024 marks the centenary of this landmark struggle.

    The Vaikom Satygraha, emerged from the relics of the Non-Cooperation Movement (1920-22), the first nationwide political agitation against the British Raj led under the institutional leadership of Mahatma Gandhi and the Indian National Congress. For the first time, it brought Gandhian methods of non-violent protest to Travancore.
