Sepoy Mutiny The First Fight for Freedom

     The revolt of 1857 was one of the most momentous events in the history of the fight for freedom in India – a major upheaval against the British rule. The struggle against colonial tyranny. It is often referred to as the Indian Rebellion of 1857 or the First War of Independence. The revolt began on May 10, 1857, at Meerut as a Sepoy Mutiny. It was initiated by sepoys in the Bengal Presidency against the British officers.

    Though the revolt was suppressed, the fight trembled the foundation of the East India Company in India and marked a turning point in the history of modern India. What began as a revolt by soldiers was soon joined by farmers and other civilian populations.

    It also exerted a tremendous influence on British policy and forced them to examine the entire nature of their relationship with India. At one point, people thought that it would be the downfall of the British Empire.
