Worms are not confined to our tummy only!

    We may remember that during our childhood we would be given medicines for worms known as “anthelmintics” which would eradicate a few worms by paralyzing or killing them and the intestinal movements would expel them. This gave rise to the wrong idea, which possibly persists in many of us till now, that worms infect only children and these worms reside only inside our abdomen.

    All over the world, there are various types of worms, that are parasites on humans and their study is known as Helminthology. It is a vast subject as there are many varieties of worms causing public health concerns in many places worldwide. Many of these worms are not only confined to our intestinal cavity but can affect many organs of our body.

   So, before we proceed, let us have a glimpse of them: Broadly speaking, we may divide them into Nematodes or Roundworm which are round-shaped worms, Cestodes or Tapeworm which are ribbon-like....
