The word ‘matriarchy’ is not new to the ears but unusual to visualise. We are more familiar with patriarchy, which our society has been known as for centuries. The reverence that people held for women in the Vedic age was reflected in the way they worshipped goddesses and female deities.
The Vedic Age (1500-500 BCE) is named after the Vedas which are supposed to have been written during this period. Vedas are one of the oldest scriptures in the Indian subcontinent. This age can be considered the foundation of the culture, social norms and practices we see today in our society. The main thing to consider is that the arrival of Indo-arrivals marked the beginning of the Vedic era where they settled down in the northwestern parts of what we know of India and Pakistan, today.
