The history of stock trading in India trails back to the second quarter of 1800 when the East India Company traded loan securities. The first stock market was opened in 1875 under the name of Native Share and Stock Brokers’ Association, which later changed its name to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).

   When the trade market grew in the post-independence era, by the end of the 1980s there were calls for a financial market regulator to oversee the functioning of the stock market. In 1988 Securities and Exchange Board of India has emerged following the call to protect the interest of both investors and the share market. A stock market is a place where stocks or shares of publicly listed companies and government bonds are traded.
