Injecting life into the past

He adores art. That is where his heart is. But he is not just an art aficionado. A lot more since he has fervently pursued what is called art collection since his adolescence.

A skilled graphic designer and one of the leading art collectors of India, Mr Anil Relia, 62, is especially known in India and abroad for his collection of about 4000 portraits of royals and other notable personalities dating back to 16th century to contemporary works.

Gracious and affable, Relia graduated from the prestigious M.S. University of Baroda in applied arts, serigraphy and photography in 1978. Starting with a humble beginning as a graphic designer and screen printing, Relia has brushed shoulders with dozens of India’s art world like M.F. Husain, Jyoti Bhatt, S.H. Raza and Manu Parekh, to name only a few. Besides portraits, his personal collection includes a number of miniature paintings, early photographs and also works of well-known artists like M.F. Husain, Bhupen....
