Indian sports – scaling new heights and earning laurels

   HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of young people who were not even born when India won the World Cup in 1983 erupted in joy after India beat Sri Lanka to win the tenth cricket World Cup and give the country its biggest cricketing moment in 28 years.

    For young India, the feeling was exciting and special. Across the country, youths straddling speeding motorbikes screamed "Chak De! India" and wildly waved the national flag. In a nation where people are highly passionate about cricket and every child at some point in their growing up years dreams of becoming a cricketer, the coming home of the world cup after a wait of so many years is a significant achievement.

   The recent success in the World Cup was scripted by the youngsters under Coach Gary Kirsten. India had to beat every former World Cup winner - including three-time defending champion Australia in the quarterfinals to win the title for the first time since the....
