The Internet is changing. The ideals of its founders viz., a free and uncontrolled platform to all for exchange of views and information seem to be increasingly unrealistic, given the misuse of its wonderful facilities and the restrictions imposed by several nations on its use.

An Independent Internet: Work of Pioneers

- 1974: Bob Kahn and Vint Cerf, publish the Transmission Control /Internet Protocol to exchange information between different sub-networks without any central control.

- 1980: Tim Berners-Lee, a British physicist,writes a programme, Enquire, allowing links to be made between arbitrary nodes.

- 1990: The packet-switching network (ARPANET) which provides for a message to be sent in various parts along different routes (making it difficult to track and control the transmission) is entrusted to the U.S. National Science Foundation.

- 1991: The NSF lifts control of the Net and allowed private enterprises to....
