Khushwant Singh; one of the significant literary personalities in the post-colonial Indian English Literature is both read and revered, was born on February 2, 1915 at village Hadali in Khushab district, Sargodha, Punjab, now in Pakistan, to Lady Varyam Kaur and Sir Sobha Singh; a civil contractor who migrated to Delhi to work as a prominent contractor on Lutyen’s Delhi. The time spent at Hadali along with his grandmother had such an impact on him, that he penned a poignant short story, ‘The Portrait of a lady,’ about her. His school days at Modern School, and college days at St. Stephen’s were equally bad, as he was neither good at studies or sports.
