It’s not only in Assam that tea of rich quality is grown and is sold under different brand names. The sub- Himalayan state of Uttarakhand has been producing tea for the past several decades but not known outside the state.

    In fact,the idea of cultivating tea in the hilly slopes of Uttarakhand came to British in the second decade of the last century after achieving success elsewhere in the country. During the early part of the last century,the contemporary British authorities in India began planting tea saplings in Uttarakhand hills,part of what was called western Uttar Pradesh, in consultation with the help of Chinese experts.

   Some slopes in parts of both the Garhwal and Kumaun divisions of the hilly region, subsequently formed as Uttarakhand state in the year 2000,were chosen for the purpose. A flavoured tea called ‘’black tea’’ was subsequently produced which had become quite popular....
